16 Feb 042: How to Find Opportunities in China’s Film Industry
International Business Consultant Rosalie Lutfiyya shares insight on finding opportunities in China film, protecting your IP, and why you should avoid co-productions.
Rosalie Lutfiyya discusses her experiences working in China as an International Business Consultant. She is a natural connector and brings the right people together which facilitates East-West partnerships.
She discusses the right legal framework for contracts in China, protecting your IP, the power of WeChat, and the right way to build relations in China.
THREE KEY POINTS:
1. BOOTS ON THE GROUND
Be on the ground in China. Namely, you can’t expect great success if you don’t make the effort to meet your potential partners in China.
2. PROTECTING YOUR IP
When you draw up a contract – you’ll need your contract governed by Chinese law. Furthermore, if it’s governed by a foreign country’s law – it will probably not be enforceable in China.
3. HIRE A CHINESE PRODUCTION TEAM
There are many Chinese production service companies you can use in China. Thus this helps in it being less expensive than flying in an entire crew from overseas.
THREE TAKEAWAYS
1. DON’T DO CO-PRODUCTIONS
Additionally, Rosalie says co-productions are too hard to pull off with all the regulations. As a resut, it’s better if you make a completely Chinese domestic film or do a foreign film.
2. WeChat Opportunities
This is a great resource for like-minded associates. Contrarily, Americans tend to use email a lot. However, email isn’t so popular in China. Get on WeChat and join some film or TV groups.
3. BUILD RELATIONSHIPS FIRST
Moreover, Americans like to get down to business. In other words, we tend to think short-term. On the other hand, this isn’t the case in China. There – you need to build relationships first before Chinese will want to do business with you.
Lastly, keep an eye out for Rosalie’s announcement sometime later this year about her new app. Her plan is to create a marketplace matching service between Chinese investors and filmmakers around the world. You can keep track of Rosalie on her LinkedIn page. Check out the show notes for that URL.
